The Importance of Predictability

Jenny Houston | JUL 7, 2022

Way back when, before I was a yoga teacher (and before I was married and had a kid, for that matter!) yoga was my most favorite hobby. I practiced nearly every single day, and often I would take two or three classes in a day. The luxury of personal time! I couldn’t get enough, and I enjoyed all the different styles, from the strong Vinyasas to the slow, therapeutic, Restorative styles. I remember there were days when I felt eager for the unexpected. I was ready for whatever the teacher threw at us; partner work, headstands, deep backbends, long complicated sequences…

And there were the days when I wanted to sweat and move my body, but I just didn’t have the bandwidth for the ‘unexpected’. These were the days when I knew I could fall back on my most favorite style to practice, Heated Yoga.

Not all heated yoga classes are a ‘set series’, but the style I’m trained in is, and when I knew I needed predictability, I knew I could trust the consistency. Knowing in advance what I’d be asked to do was such a regulator for my nervous system and it took away the extra energy spent wondering:

“Do I feel like being social and ‘partnering-up’ for handstand training?”

“How is my stamina today? Do I have the oomph to keep up?”

“Do I feel like being in ‘listening-mode’ or is today a good day to go inward with a practice I know really well?”

As a teacher, these are questions I encourage my students to ask of themselves. And the juice is in deciding, on any given day, “What will serve me today?”

Sometimes there’s value in stepping outside of our comfort zone and being open to not knowing ‘what’s next’. And sometimes, giving ourselves space for certainty can be a tremendous gift.

For most of us, our daily lives are anything but predictable. The constant surge of noise, movement, conversation, and interaction impact us in ways we’re mostly accustomed to. We’re already so overloaded with stimulus. And then something unexpected hits us. Maybe we’ve got just enough left in us that we’re capable of managing that extra stress, maybe not. There is so much ease in having a little window of knowing what’s coming next.

You can trust me as a teacher.

I’ll take great care of you.

Your well-being and safety are important to me.
